Starting with the Basic tools overview
Though there are several tools to get your head round in InDesign and it’s easy to feel intimidated by them all. So, have a look over the primary tools in InDesign cc and learn what each specific tool is for, so you don’t feel quiet lost.
You can identify the tools with additional feature by small arrow in the lower right corner. You can also right click (windows) or ctrl+ click (mac) on any tool to access related tools.
Place your cursor over any tool without clicking as this will display the tool name along with its keyboard shortcut in parenthesis.
- TEXT WRAP ONLY AFFECTS TEXT BENEATH

Go to InDesign>Preferences>Composition. Enable the Text Wrap Only Affects Text Beneath checkbox and tap to the Ok option. Now you can easily put text on top of your images with the text wrap wherever you want to.
- MULTIPLACE FROM BRIDGE
You can use file> place in InDesign or just simply drag-drop images into your InDesign documents, well it’s an easy way to bring multiple images at once.
Open adobe bridge, choose the images you want to use in your layout and choose file>place>in InDesign. As this will switch you to InDesign and give you a loaded place cursor to insert up your selected images. Use the arrow keys to cycle through the images in the cursor and simply make a tap to place them. After then use Object>Fitting option, if required.
- CREATE AUTOCORRECT MACROS
Go to InDesign >preference >autocorrect. In the preference dialog, click the enable autocorrect checkbox and click the Add button to bring up the Add to Autocorrect List dialog. In the misspelled word field, type “ ADBE” and then in the correction field, type “Adobe Systems, Inc.” Click ok and now each time you type ADBE, InDesign will autocorrect it to Adobe Systems, Inc.
- COMPOUND PATH FRAMES
very few of you were familiar with the fact that you can place a single image in multiple frames for visual effect. To do this:
- Select the rectangles, ellipse or polygon frame tool and create two or more frames.
- Choose the selection tool (V) and shift-click each frame.
- Select Objects>Paths>Make Compound Paths.
- Go to File>Place, select images you want and click open.
InDesign will automatically place the image inside your new frames.
- GO BETWEEN CHARACTER AND PARAGRAPH

7. PLACE INDESIGN DOCS IN INDESIGN
Most enhancing feature of InDesign CC is the collaboration feature in which you can place one InDesign document into another one.
This means you could be working on one master document while your colleagues work on other sections. Once they are done, you can place their InDesign documents into yours as you as place any other graphics (File>Place). If you require editing the placed InDesign document then choose edit, edit original.
- CONTROL YOUR PHOTOSHOP LAYERS
It’s great that InDesign can place and output layered Photoshop files but what makes it more enhancing is that you can turn on and off layers in that placed PSD directly within InDesign. You can use the same PSD in your document multiple times with different layers turned on and off for different looks.
Go to File>Place, search to your PSD, and click open. Now select Object>Object Layer Options and in the dialog that appears, turn on the preview option and tap to the Eye icon on and off next to the desired layer to control visibility.
- AUTOMATIC CONTINUED ON AND FROM
If you have started and then continue to another one or you want to have “continued on page [xx]” or a “continued from page [xx].” Well indesign can automatically manage this for you.
You just need to select the Type tool (T) and create a new text frame. Once created drag the new text frame to the original one. In the new text frame write “continued on page [leave a space]” or “continued from page [space].
” Go to Type>Insert Special Character>Markers>Next Page Number (or Previous Page Number.) InDesign will automatically insert the dynamic number.
- ROTATE YOUR SPREADS
Wants to vertical spread InDesign document for a calendar layout? Well now it’s too easy to do a typical left or right spread and rotate your spreads by 90 degree make it easier to layout your content. This way you can layout the calendar as it would look, but it would still be a right or left spread on the press. In case to rotate spreads, go to View>Rotate spread and make selection from the list.
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR LINKS PANEL
Link panel(window>links) is always helpful, however in cs4 it became much more customizable to show you not only more info about your links and only the information that you want to see.
Click the links panel’s flyout menu and choose the panel options. Click on the check boxes of the info that you wish to appear in the link panel and after then click ok to apply the changes.
